AIAS-HSI is an institute for multidisciplinary research and teaching about work and labour at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the largest university in the Netherlands. AIAS-HSI combines insights from the social sciences, economics, and legal theories in its research. To put the multidisciplinary objectives of the institute into practice, AIAS-HSI initiates and conducts research, gives advice and organizes meetings, conferences, courses, etc. AIAS-HSI is part of the Law Faculty. With 3,700 students and over 400 staff members, it is one of the largest law faculties in the Netherlands. The Amsterdam Law School is located in the centre of Amsterdam.

AIAS-HSI has an opening for a PhD position with the title Work, security and interest representation in the creative sector.

Job description

Within the project Work, security and interest representation in the creative sector you will conduct research under supervision of Prof. Maarten Keune and Dr Wike Been.

The creative sector, consisting of market-oriented creative services such as graphic design, gaming, fashion, entertainment and media, is seen not only as one of the engines of the knowledge economy and digitization, and of economic and employment growth, but often as a forerunner or pilot in the area of organization of work: often project-based, many temporary collaborations, and many self-employed and small entrepreneurs. It is also a sector where the traditional collective stakeholders (trade unions and employers' organizations) play a limited role and where the present social security system only offers a limited degree of certainty. In addition, it is a sector where passion or intrinsic artistic motivation plays a very important role as a driving force for working in the sector, but also as a reason for concessions in terms of security and working conditions.

The research will examine three main questions:

  1. What are the interests of the creative workers in terms of (the combination of) living standards, different forms of security (job security, job security, income security), the work-life balance and the ability for autonomy and following their passion ? What are their priorities and how are they balanced against each other? What are the differences between job market positions, age groups, education levels and men / women?
  2.  What collective mechanisms (public facilities, networks, professional organizations, unions, employers' organizations, self-organized risk protection such as bread funds, etc.) do they use to manage their interests and to control uncertainties?
  3. To what extent is the traditional social security system sufficient to protect workers in the sector from job and income insecurity and to build up a proper pension? And to what extent are limitations of this system captured by alternative collective mechanisms?

These questions will form the basis for a 4-year PhD study comparing the Netherlands, Denmark and the United Kingdom. In all three countries, the creative sector shows above average economic and employment growth. The research will use a combination of research method, including a literature study, interviews and an online vignette study.

You will work at AIAS-HSI and be part of the Institute's daily activities. You will spend a period of 10 weeks for the Danish and UK fieldwork in each country.

Requirements

If you are the PhD student we are looking for you should:

  • have a degree, master’s level or equivalent, in law, sociology, economics or a related discipline;
  • have a strong motivation to do PhD research;
  • be proficient in English;
  • have excellent scientific writing, planning and communication skills;
  • have the ability to do research independently.

Appointment

We will offer you an initial contract for 12 months. Upon positive evaluation of your performance we will extend the contract by three years.

The envisaged starting date is 15 September 2018.

The position is first and foremost a research position; yet you will have the opportunity to be involved in individually agreed teaching in the field connected to your research.

The gross full-time monthly salary will be in accordance with the salary scales for PhD candidates at Dutch universities, scale P (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) ranging from €2,266 to €2,897 gross per month (full-time equivalent). Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end-of-year Bonus.
