The hybrid atom-ion quantum systems lab (HYQS) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is looking for a highly-motivated student with excellent laboratory skills for performing state-of-the-art atomic physics experiments.

The HYQS lab, headed by Dr. Rene Gerritsma, is part of the Quantum Gases and Quantum Information (QGQI) cluster at the UvA. The group studies mixtures of ultra-cold atomic gases that are interacting with trapped ions. The main focus of the group is to study the quantum dynamics of these systems while at the same time developing technology for emerging quantum applications, such as quantum computing and simulation. Project description

In the project you will answer an intriguing question: do magneto-molecular, or Feshbach resonances, exist between atoms and ions? Such resonances play a pivotal role in neutral atomic systems for the purpose of tuning the atom-atom interactions and find wide spread application in studying atomic quantum many-body systems and in quantum simulation. They basically allow the experimentalist to switch on or off the interactions between the particles at will. In ion-atom mixtures, their existence has been predicted, but they have not been observed so far as the required low temperatures have not been reached. Since we will very likely be the first group in the world to reach into the quantum regime of atom-ion interactions, you could be the first person to observe Feshbach resonances between atoms and ions.

Requirements

You hold a MSc. in (theoretical) physics or physical chemistry and are requested to motivate why you apply for the position and to supply a curriculum vitae. Applicants with a degree in chemistry are also requested to detail their affinity with condensed matter physics and motivation for pursuing a PhD in experimental physics.

Other skills/experiences/documents that would benefit your application are:

  • previous laboratory experience in an atomic physics lab;
  • working knowledge of a programming language (phyton, C++ or equivalent);
  • excellent English oral and written communication skills;
  • scientific publications.

Appointment

The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 4 years (initial appointment will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it can be extended for a total duration of 4 years) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. The PhD candidate is also expected to assist in teaching of undergraduates.

Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from €2,222 in the first year to €2,840 in the last year. The Collective Employment Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable. Favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
